Mumbai airport will suspend all flight operations for six hours on May 7, from 11 am to 5 pm, as both runways undergo pre-monsoon maintenance work. The closure affects Runway 09/27 and Runway 14/32, rendering the airport non-operational during this period.
Annual Monsoon Preparedness
The maintenance is part of the airport's annual monsoon contingency plan to ensure safety and smooth operations during the heavy rains that Mumbai experiences each year. Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL), the airport operator, stated that the work is essential for maintaining the large airside area, which spans 1,033 acres.
Advanced Stakeholder Consultation
Recognizing the significant impact of a full shutdown at one of the world's busiest airports, officials conducted consultations with airlines and other stakeholders six months in advance. This allowed airlines to adjust their flight schedules well ahead of time. MIAL noted that the consultation process was part of its comprehensive monsoon contingency plan, enabling stakeholders to plan appropriately.
Previous Disruptions
Mumbai airport has faced major disruptions in the past. On March 8, a total of 66 air traffic movements were cancelled, including 32 arrivals and 34 departures. On March 3, operations were more severely affected, with 107 cancellations in total—54 arrivals and 53 departures—due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia, leaving many passengers stranded.
Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for any schedule changes on May 7. The airport operator assured that the maintenance is critical for ensuring safe operations during the monsoon season.
