Mumbai's Coastal Road Unveils India's First Musical Road Section

In a groundbreaking urban innovation, a section of the Mumbai Coastal Road has been transformed into India's inaugural "musical road." This unique initiative will be officially inaugurated by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday, February 11, at 12:30 PM, marking a significant milestone in the city's infrastructure development.

Location and Technical Details of the Musical Road

The musical road has been meticulously created on the northbound lane of the Mumbai Coastal Road, specifically from Nariman Point towards Worli. Following the exit from the underground tunnel at Worli, a dedicated 500-meter stretch on the first lane adjacent to the divider has been equipped with special grooves. These grooves, commonly referred to as rumble strips, have been precisely laid at fixed intervals and measurements to achieve the desired acoustic effect.

When vehicles traverse this specially designed section at a controlled speed of 70-80 kilometers per hour, the iconic tune of 'Jai Ho' from the acclaimed film Slumdog Millionaire becomes audible inside the vehicle. The sound is generated through the friction between the vehicle's tires and the textured road surface, creating a harmonious musical experience for commuters.

Safety Measures and Conceptual Origin

To ensure motorist awareness and safety, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has installed multiple signboards within the tunnel. These alert signs are strategically placed at distances of 500 meters, 100 meters, and 60 meters before the musical road section, providing ample warning to drivers about the upcoming unique feature.

The innovative concept of the musical road was originally proposed by former Member of Parliament Rahul Shewale. His vision has now been realized through this project, which combines engineering precision with creative urban design to enhance the driving experience on one of Mumbai's key arterial roads.

This development not only adds an element of novelty to daily commutes but also showcases Mumbai's commitment to integrating technology and entertainment into public infrastructure. The musical road is expected to become a popular attraction, drawing attention to the Coastal Road project and setting a precedent for similar innovations across India.
