MY Bharat Takes Action to Revive Abandoned Youth Hostel in Trichy
In a significant move to support youth and sports activities, Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat), formerly known as Nehru Yuva Kendra and operating under the Union Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs, has initiated steps to revive its abandoned youth hostel in Khajamalai, Trichy. Located near the district sports complex, this facility has been non-operational for years, but now a fresh detailed project report (DPR) has been prepared to redevelop and reopen it for students and sportspersons visiting the city.
Inspection and Renovation Plans Underway
The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) has conducted a thorough inspection of the hostel on Racecourse Road and is currently preparing a cost estimate for the necessary renovation work. Officials have highlighted that the building has remained locked since 2021 and faces severe maintenance issues, including seepage, which require structural repairs and strengthening to make it habitable again.
MY Bharat officials revealed that an earlier proposal seeking Rs 90 lakh for repairs was submitted to the Union Sports Ministry in 2022. However, the ministry directed the district unit to revise the estimate to stay within the Rs 20 lakh cap allocated for youth hostel repairs. A revised proposal was sent in 2024, but as of now, the renovation work has not commenced, leaving the facility in a state of disrepair.
Political Support for Enhanced Funding
Trichy MP Durai Vaiko, who recently inspected the facility, has pledged to urge the Union Ministry to allocate additional funds for a comprehensive overhaul. He emphasized the importance of this hostel in providing low-cost accommodation for students traveling to the city for exams and academic activities, as well as for sportspersons participating in events at the nearby sports complex.
The hostel, built on land provided by the state government, offers basic amenities including a canteen and dining area. It is designed to accommodate youths under 35 years of age at nominal charges, making it an affordable option for those in need of temporary lodging. The revival of this facility is expected to boost local youth engagement and support educational and sports initiatives in the region.
With the DPR in place and CPWD's involvement, the project is poised to move forward, pending approval of the revised funding. Stakeholders are optimistic that the renovation will soon begin, transforming the abandoned hostel into a vibrant hub for young people in Trichy.
