Mysuru Clears 80% Lake Encroachments, Targets Full Recovery

Mysuru District Administration Intensifies Lake Conservation Drive

The district administration in Mysuru has significantly ramped up its efforts to map and survey unassessed lakes and water bodies across the region. This initiative comes as part of a broader strategy to address widespread encroachments that have plagued these vital natural resources.

Alarming Statistics on Lake Encroachments

Out of the 2,991 lakes identified in Mysuru district, a staggering 1,449 have been subjected to encroachment. These illegal occupations have resulted in the usurpation of approximately 1,472 acres of land, highlighting the scale of the problem. The encroachments range from small-scale intrusions to large-scale developments that have severely compromised the ecological integrity of these water bodies.

Significant Progress in Encroachment Clearance

During the ongoing encroachment clearance drive, district authorities have successfully cleared about 80% of the identified lake encroachments. This marks a substantial achievement in the administration's conservation efforts. Deputy Commissioner G Lakshmikanth Reddy confirmed this progress, stating that surveys of almost all lakes have been completed.

"We are committed to restoring these lakes to their original state. The administration has cleared about 80% of the encroachments and aims to complete the remaining 20% within the next four months," Reddy told TOI. He further emphasized that the removal process is being meticulously documented with geo-tagged evidence to ensure transparency and prevent future violations.

Regional Focus and Detailed Reporting

Officers have identified Periyapatna taluk as having the highest number of encroached lakes, necessitating targeted interventions in this area. The Survey, Settlement and Land Records (SSLR) department has submitted a comprehensive status report on all lakes to both the district administration and the district lake protection committee. This committee, headed by the deputy commissioner, will use this report to initiate conservation measures following the clearance of encroachments.

Voices from the Community

Attahalli Devaraju, a leader of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha, highlighted the diverse nature of the encroachments. "Most of the lakes were encroached on by land sharks who constructed schools, educational institutions, petrol bunks, and even developed farm houses around the lakes. It is imperative that the district administration intensifies its efforts to clear such encroachments after conducting thorough surveys and initiates measures to protect government property," he told TOI.

This community input underscores the urgency of the situation and the need for sustained administrative action to safeguard these critical water bodies for future generations.
