Nashik Municipal Corporation Executes Major Encroachment Clearance Drive
The Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) conducted a significant operation on Friday to remove encroachments in the Milindnagar area. This action is a crucial step to enable the construction of a proposed bridge and adjoining road over the Nandini river, which are key infrastructure projects planned in preparation for the Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2027.
Infrastructure Development for Kumbh Mela
Acting on directives from Commissioner Manisha Khatri, the drive was led by Deputy Commissioner (Encroachment) Sangeeta Nandurkar. The public works department of the civic body will construct a 450-meter-long bridge and develop a 100-meter stretch of approach road on both sides. This infrastructure aims to connect Trimbak Road with the Mumbai highway, significantly easing traffic congestion anticipated during the Simhastha Kumbh Mela.
Details of the Demolition Operation
During the demolition drive, 27 unauthorized structures and shanties were cleared in strict accordance with the sanctioned layout plan. NMC officials ensured that affected residents were provided with temporary alternative accommodation within Milindnagar, which helped the operation proceed without any confrontations. Notices had been issued for over a month, and continuous dialogue with residents facilitated their cooperation, resulting in a smooth and peaceful execution.
Security and Manpower Deployment
The civic body carried out the operation under tight police security. Deputy Commissioner of Police Monika Raut and Senior Police Inspector Vishwas Patil of Mumbai Naka Police Station supervised the bandobast, deploying over 200 police personnel to maintain order. More than 400 NMC officials and staff members from various departments participated, including public works, town planning, electrical, water supply, drainage, and the encroachment squad.
Operational Logistics and Equipment
The operation commenced at 9 AM and continued until late afternoon. It involved the use of 3 JCBs, 1 Pokland machine, 10-12 dumpers, and gas-cutting equipment to efficiently clear the encroachments.
Expected Benefits and Future Impact
According to civic authorities, the river bridge and connecting road are expected to significantly improve traffic movement between Trimbak Road and the Mumbai highway. This upgrade is essential to strengthen Nashik's preparedness for the forthcoming Simhastha Kumbh Mela, which is anticipated to attract a massive influx of visitors. The infrastructure projects are seen as vital for managing congestion and enhancing overall accessibility during the religious gathering.
