Nature Park Construction Launches at Vyttila Mobility Hub in Kochi
Commuters at the Vyttila Mobility Hub in Kochi can look forward to a refreshing green retreat, as work has finally begun on the long-awaited 'Nature Park' situated directly behind the bus bays. After a delay of nearly two years caused by funding constraints, the Cochin Smart City Mission Ltd (CSML) has initiated the Rs 5.43 crore project, aiming to convert a neglected wasteland into a serene waterfront recreational area.
Project Details and Funding Challenges
The Nature Park spans 5.5 acres along the banks of the Kaniyampuzha River, with the goal of creating a lush, natural environment for relaxation. CSML had previously entered into an agreement with the Vytilla Mobility Hub Society (VMHS) to develop this open space and undertake repair works on the carriageway within the integrated transport terminal. However, the project faced significant delays as VMHS was only recently able to provide its share of the funding, which amounts to half of the total Rs 9.56 crore allocated for both the open space development and carriageway repairs.
Officials emphasized that the project will prioritize preserving the site's natural character by minimizing artificial infrastructure and focusing on extensive green landscaping. Unlike traditional parks dominated by concrete structures, the plan involves retaining existing trees and enhancing the landscape through nature-based interventions.
Progress and Future Plans
A CSML official stated, "Our vision is to develop a space where passengers can unwind, while also serving as a recreational lung space for nearby residents. Work on the open space behind the bus bays has commenced. The area has been cleaned, and thick undergrowth has been cleared. Technical evaluation is currently under way, and actual construction work will begin in two weeks."
In a related development, long-pending repair works on the main carriageway of the Vyttila Mobility Hub have been completed, with only minor finishing tasks such as painting remaining. This progress aligns with CSML's broader urban improvement initiatives, which include a series of projects worth Rs 30 crore aimed at enhancing public spaces across Kochi.
Broader Urban Enhancement Efforts
These initiatives feature the beautification of the Palarivattom and Vyttila flyovers through public art projects. Additionally, administrative sanction has been granted for Rs 12 crore worth of projects, such as the renovation of Arjunan Master Ground at Palluruthy and the construction of a public walkway at Panampilly Nagar. These efforts underscore CSML's commitment to transforming Kochi into a more livable and aesthetically pleasing city, with the Nature Park at Vyttila Mobility Hub serving as a key component of this green infrastructure push.
