Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation Accelerates Tunnel Road Project Under Palm Beach Road
The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has significantly expedited construction work on a crucial tunnel road beneath Palm Beach Road in Sanpada's sector-19. This infrastructure development, located opposite the Moraj Circle area, has become a focal point of contention due to its impact on the local green cover.
Tree Transplantation and Axing Plan Approved
Following initial approval from the state tree authority in June 2023, the civic body's tree authority has reaffirmed clearance for the project. According to the finalized decision, 329 trees will be carefully relocated to alternative sites, while 111 trees face axing to make way for the underground passage.
Civic Chief Kailas Shinde has maintained a firm stance, declining to implement any modifications to the subway plan despite mounting pressure from concerned citizens. Construction activities have already commenced opposite the prominent Kesar Solitaire building, with visible progress at the site.
Local Opposition and Environmental Concerns
Residents and environmental activists have engaged in prolonged disputes with NMMC authorities regarding the tree preservation issue. These concerned groups have persistently advocated for alternative solutions that would minimize ecological disruption.
Despite their efforts, NMMC contractors have proceeded with preparatory work, installing notice boards and plastic net barricades around the construction zone. Heavy excavation equipment has been deployed, marking the project's tangible advancement.
Project Specifications and Timeline
The official notice board outlines comprehensive project details:
- Total project cost: ₹33.80 crore
- Execution timeline: 18 months (excluding one rainy season)
- Commencement date: December 15, 2015
- Expected completion: October 14, 2027
Community Response and Protest Actions
Local resident V Krishnan reported observing initial excavation work during the first week of April, with more intensive operations beginning recently. "I noticed some excavation activity earlier with vehicles parked around," Krishnan stated. "Full-scale work started this week with four-wheelers parked nearby. So far, the trees have remained untouched."
Protestors have organized multiple demonstrations, including human chain formations at the construction site and outside NMMC headquarters. These peaceful protests have unfortunately failed to produce satisfactory resolutions from municipal authorities.
Frustrated by the lack of response, locals and activists have explored legal avenues and proposed plan modifications, though these efforts have yet to yield significant changes to the project's trajectory.
The tunnel road development represents a classic urban dilemma, balancing infrastructure modernization against environmental preservation, with Navi Mumbai residents caught between progress and protection of their green spaces.
