New Passport Rules July 1: Fees to Rise Up to 75%

The Indian government will implement revised passport fees from July 1, 2026, with increases ranging from 43% to 75% across various categories. The Ministry of External Affairs announced that a 10% discount on fresh applications will be available for children below nine years and elders above 60 years.

Key Fee Changes for Fresh Passport Applications

For a fresh 36-page passport for individuals aged 18 and above, the normal route fee will rise to Rs 2,500 from the current Rs 1,500 — a 67% increase. The Tatkal category fee for the same document will increase to Rs 5,000 from Rs 3,500, representing a 43% rise.

A 60-page passport under the normal route will cost Rs 3,500 instead of Rs 2,000 — a 75% increase. The Tatkal fee for a 60-page passport will go up to Rs 6,000 from Rs 4,000, a 50% jump.

Lost or Damaged Passport Fees

For applications in the lost or damaged category, a 36-page passport via the normal route will cost Rs 5,000, up from Rs 3,000 (67% increase). The Tatkal fee for the same will be Rs 7,500 instead of Rs 5,000 (50% rise).

For a 60-page lost/damaged passport, the normal route fee will be Rs 6,000, compared to Rs 3,500 currently, and the Tatkal fee will be Rs 8,500, up from Rs 5,500.

Discount for Children and Seniors

A special discount of 10% on fresh applications will apply to children below nine years of age and elders above 60 years. This discount is intended to ease the financial burden on these age groups.

The revised fee structure will come into effect from July 1, 2026. Passport seekers are advised to plan their applications accordingly to avoid higher charges.
