NHAI Approves Subway in Vijayawada for NH-16 Safety

NHAI Greenlights Subway Construction in Vijayawada to Boost Road Safety

In a significant development for Vijayawada, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced plans to construct a subway that will link Ranigarithota and Balaji Nagar with MG Road via the Netaji bridge. This initiative is set to alleviate the daily challenges faced by residents who currently must cross the hazardous NH-16 stretch between Kanaka Durgamma Varadhi and Benz Circle.

Project Details and Timelines

NHAI has already issued tenders for the subway construction at the Netaji flyover on NH-16. According to Vidya Sagar, director of the NHAI Vijayawada project implementation unit, the project is estimated to cost approximately Rs 3 crore and will be funded entirely by NHAI. The construction is targeted for completion within six months from the date the contract is awarded to the selected agency. The deadline for tender submissions is February 24.

The new subway will measure 50 metres in length, 2.5 metres in height, and 5 metres in width. This infrastructure will enable motorists from Ranigarithota and Balaji Nagar to access MG Road directly, bypassing the dangerous NH-16 segment entirely.

Addressing a Critical Safety Issue

The NH-16 stretch at the Netaji flyover has earned a grim reputation as a death trap due to numerous pedestrian fatalities over the years. Most incidents involve individuals being struck by speeding vehicles while attempting to cross the national highway. It is estimated that around 10,000 people from Ranigarithota and Balaji Nagar cross this stretch daily for work and other city access, highlighting the urgent need for safer alternatives.

Residents have long advocated for this subway, and the NHAI's decision has been met with relief. Rama Krishna, a resident of Ranigarithota, expressed optimism, stating, "We are happy that NHAI is finally taking up the construction of the subway, which has been a long-pending demand. We urge the government to complete it swiftly to prevent further deaths and ensure seamless travel."

Broader Implications and Community Impact

This project not only aims to enhance pedestrian safety but also promises to improve overall traffic flow in the area. By providing a dedicated passage, it will reduce congestion and accidents on NH-16, benefiting both local commuters and through traffic. The initiative reflects a proactive approach by authorities to address urban infrastructure gaps and prioritize public welfare in Vijayawada.
