Noida Power Department Launches Major Transformer Installation Project

The power department in Noida has initiated a significant infrastructure upgrade by beginning the installation of 55 new 400 kV transformers. This strategic move aims to substantially improve electricity supply reliability during the upcoming summer months while reducing overload-related disruptions that have affected the city's 4.75 lakh consumers.

Timeline and Beneficiary Areas

The installation work commenced earlier this week and is projected for completion within the next 10 days. Key residential sectors expected to benefit from this enhancement include sectors 22, 23, 26, 55, and 63, among other areas across the district.

Broader Infrastructure Plan

Officials have clarified that this initiative represents just one component of a more comprehensive strategy to strengthen Noida's power network. The broader plan involves adding 500 new transformers across the district by 2027 to effectively meet the escalating electricity demand driven by rapid urban development.

"This initiative is crucial not only for residential consumers but also for industrial sectors, as it seeks to establish a reliable power supply before the challenging summer months," explained Vivek Kumar Patel, superintending engineer (technical) of the Noida power department under PVVNL. "The first transformer has already been installed in Sector 22, a densely populated area that has historically experienced frequent tripping issues due to overloading."

Safety and Modernization Efforts

Patel emphasized that the installation of these new transformers remains a top priority, with simultaneous maintenance and repair work being conducted on existing equipment. Additionally, comprehensive earthing work is being implemented alongside the transformer installations to enhance safety and reliability during adverse weather conditions.

"We are continuously upgrading the district's power system under the SCADA scheme, which aims to foster improved efficiency and reliability in power distribution," stated Sanjay Kumar Jain, chief engineer of the Noida power department, PVVNL.

SCADA System Integration

The SCADA (supervisory control and data acquisition) scheme plays a vital role in modernizing Noida's power distribution network. This advanced system monitors and controls distribution sectors, optimizes overall network efficiency, and provides greater system reliability and sustainability through real-time data analysis and automated controls.

Addressing Rising Power Demand

These modernization preparations directly address the district's escalating power demand, attributed to increased industrial, commercial, and residential activities. Compared to the peak power demand of over 2800 MW recorded in 2025, Noida anticipates peak power demand to exceed 3000 MW this year.

Seasonal Demand Patterns

Typically, power demand reaches its zenith in mid-July or August when humidity levels rise substantially. Contributing factors include increased usage of air conditioners and other cooling appliances, population growth, and relentless heat waves. Air conditioning alone accounts for an estimated 30-50% of domestic and commercial power consumption during peak summer months.

The transformer installation project represents a proactive measure to ensure Noida's power infrastructure can withstand these seasonal pressures while supporting the city's continued economic and residential expansion.
