Noida and Ghaziabad Road Safety Trends in Q1 2026
Noida witnessed a significant improvement in road safety during the first quarter of 2026, with a notable reduction in accidents, deaths, and injuries. In contrast, Ghaziabad experienced an increase in road accidents and fatalities during the same period, according to district-wise data released by the Uttar Pradesh transport department on Thursday.
Noida's Road Safety Achievements
In Noida, road accident deaths decreased by 13.2%, dropping from 121 in January-March 2025 to 105 in the same period in 2026. The total number of road accidents fell sharply by 23%, from 300 to 231, while the number of injured persons declined by 17.4%, from 219 to 181. These figures highlight the effectiveness of sustained enforcement and awareness campaigns in the district.
Ghaziabad's Deteriorating Situation
Ghaziabad, on the other hand, saw a 16.7% rise in road accident deaths, increasing from 90 in the first quarter of 2025 to 105 in the corresponding period of 2026. The total number of accidents also climbed by 1.6%, from 248 to 252. However, there was a slight improvement in injuries, which decreased by 4.3%, from 188 to 180, marking the only positive aspect in the district's data.
Government Initiatives and Targets
Udit Narayan, the Assistant Regional Transport Officer (Enforcement) of Gautam Buddh Nagar, attributed Noida's success to continuous awareness and enforcement drives. He stated, "We conducted awareness and enforcement drives due to which road accidents and related deaths dropped this year compared to the previous year. We are further expediting enforcement to cut fatalities by 50% as decided by the government."
The data was released as part of a broader push by the UP transport department, which has directed all regional transport officials to prepare fresh action plans to reduce road accident deaths. The measures include better road engineering, faster accident response, improved trauma care within the golden hour, stricter enforcement, and wider public awareness.
Deputy Transport Commissioner Mayank Jyoti, in a letter to transport officials across Uttar Pradesh, reminded that the state road safety council set a target last year to reduce road accidents and fatalities by 50%. He emphasized, "The district-level committees have been directed to prepare a fresh action plan and undertake all possible efforts — improved road engineering, rapid response to accidents, and better trauma care within the golden hour — to achieve at least a 50% reduction in deaths from road accidents compared to the previous year."
Alignment with Global Goals
This initiative aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal of halving global road traffic deaths and injuries by 2030, a commitment reinforced by the Stockholm Declaration of 2020.
Statewide and District-Level Data
Across Uttar Pradesh's 75 districts, Fatehgarh recorded the steepest rise in fatalities, with deaths increasing by 43.5% from 62 to 89. Conversely, Ambedkar Nagar saw the sharpest improvement, with deaths falling by 41.1% from 73 to 43.
At the state level, Uttar Pradesh recorded a marginal 0.4% drop in total accidents, from 12,549 to 12,502, and a 3.4% decline in deaths, from 6,863 to 6,629, between January and March. However, injuries rose by 5.5%, from 9,453 to 9,969, during the same period.
