Odisha's First Skywalk to Transform Bhubaneswar's Busy NH-16 Corridor
In a landmark development for urban infrastructure in Odisha, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has unveiled plans to construct the state's first skywalk. This 500-meter-long pedestrian bridge will span the bustling NH-16, connecting the key junctions of Palasuni and Rasulgarh in Bhubaneswar. With an estimated cost of Rs 20 crore, the project aims to revolutionize pedestrian safety and traffic management in one of the city's most congested areas.
Modern Amenities and Strategic Design for Enhanced Safety
NHAI officials have confirmed that the skywalk will be equipped with state-of-the-art features, including comprehensive lighting systems, multiple exit points, and secure pathways to ensure a safe and convenient experience for pedestrians. Veerendra Singh, NHAI's State Regional Manager, emphasized the initiative's broader context, stating, "We are identifying high-traffic density stretches on national highways in Bhubaneswar and other busy locations to build foot over bridges and skywalks. Odisha's inaugural skywalk will be established on the Palasuni-Rasulgarh stretch in the capital."
The proposed structure is expected to provide seamless connectivity between these two bustling junctions, which daily witness heavy flows of both vehicles and pedestrians. Singh highlighted the dual benefits, noting, "This skywalk will significantly enhance pedestrian safety and convenience. By reducing jaywalking and random crossings, it will also help streamline traffic flow, alleviating congestion."
Addressing Critical Safety Concerns in a Growing Urban Hub
Palasuni, a densely populated residential area surrounded by key localities such as Mancheswar, Rasulgarh, and Satya Vihar, has seen rapid commercial growth along the highway. However, this expansion has been marred by frequent accidents, making road safety a pressing issue. City police officials have long been troubled by the chequered history of both major and minor accidents at Palasuni. A traffic police official expressed optimism, saying, "We hope the skywalk plan materializes quickly to address these safety challenges."
Local commuters have welcomed the initiative, noting that the existing foot over bridge (FOB) at Palasuni, inaugurated on March 6, 2025, has already improved pedestrian safety. However, they believe the skywalk represents a significant advancement. Akhaya Das, a private company employee who frequently travels between Palasuni and Rasulgarh, explained, "A foot over bridge allows crossing at one point, but a skywalk will connect multiple locations. It will save time and reduce risks, making daily commutes safer and more efficient."
A Model for Future Urban Infrastructure in Odisha
Traffic experts view this project as a pioneering model for future urban development in the state. Jajati Behera, a road safety campaigner, commented, "With Bhubaneswar expanding rapidly, such projects are essential to balance pedestrian needs with vehicular movement. This skywalk sets a precedent for integrating safety and accessibility into growing cities."
Construction is slated to begin later this year, with NHAI officials assuring that the design will prioritize safety, accessibility, and convenience. The project underscores a proactive approach to urban planning, aiming to transform Bhubaneswar's transportation landscape while setting a benchmark for similar initiatives across Odisha.
