Chandigarh MC Approves Rs 21.44-Crore Canal Water Project
The Municipal Corporation (MC) of Chandigarh has prepared a Rs 21.44-crore project to supply canal water to over one lakh residents in Wards 7, 8, and 9. The proposal will be presented in the next General House meeting scheduled for Monday. This initiative aims to resolve persistent water scarcity in areas including Mauli Jagran, Raipur Kalan, Makhan Majra, Raipur Khurd, Industrial Area Phase I, Daria, Vikas Nagar, Ambedkar Colony, Charan Singh Colony, and Small Flats in Mauli Jagran.
Current Water Supply Challenges
According to the MC agenda, these areas currently rely on tubewells for freshwater supply. Any disruption in tubewell operations adversely affects the entire water supply. Residents have long demanded canal water, especially as the declining groundwater table makes tubewell supply inadequate to meet growing demand. The project proposes laying water supply lines from the Sector 32 Water Works to these localities.
Project Details and Timeline
The rough cost estimate for the augmentation of canal water facilities stands at Rs 21.44 crore. The project is expected to take about a year to complete. Once operational, it will provide significant relief to residents, particularly during summer months when water scarcity is most acute.
Leisure Valley Revamp for Accessibility
Another key proposal in the House meeting is the revamping of Leisure Valley in Sector 10, Chandigarh, at a cost of Rs 2.34 crore. The MC plans to make the park disabled-friendly by widening entry gates for wheelchair access, installing ramps with gentle gradients and grab rails, creating tactile pathways for the visually impaired, reserving accessible parking bays, providing accessible toilets, and adding signage in Braille.
Other Agenda Items
The meeting will also consider proposals to invite Expressions of Interest for the Chrysanthemum Show and Rose Festival, draft recruitment rules for specific posts in the Engineering Wing, reconstruct paver footpaths around parks in Sector 44-C, repair severely damaged manholes and sewer lines in Sector 40 housing complexes, reconstruct PCC tiles/paver blocks on footpaths in Sector 30-A, construct a footpath from the SDM Office to Poultry Farm Chowk in Industrial Area Phase I, recarpet roads in Sector 27-A, desilt and rehabilitate sewer lines on V3 road from Airport Light Point to STP Gate in Raipur Khurd, and frame recruitment rules for the CMC Office as per Central pattern.
