Prayagraj Municipal Corporation Implements New Parking Policy to Tackle Traffic Woes
In a significant move to address persistent traffic congestion and bring order to vehicle management, the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced the development of structured parking facilities along 11 major roads in the Civil Lines area. This initiative, part of a broader strategy to streamline urban mobility, will see designated parking zones clearly demarcated and operational from April 1.
Comprehensive Planning and Implementation
Officials revealed that after conducting detailed surveys in multiple phases, specific roadside locations along these identified routes have been earmarked for parking. Under the new policy, vehicle owners will be required to pay fees for using these roadside parking spots, with the minimum charge set at Rs 15 for two-wheelers and Rs 30 for four-wheelers. Vehicles parked beyond the stipulated time will incur additional charges.
The operation and management of these parking sites will be handed over to private agencies through a transparent tender process. Separate tenders are being floated for different routes to ensure efficient management. Basic amenities, including public toilets, will also be developed near the parking sites to enhance user convenience.
Targeted Enforcement and No-Parking Zones
Notably, several of the roads identified for parking development are the same stretches where recent enforcement drives by the municipal corporation and traffic police resulted in challans against illegally parked vehicles. However, Nawab Yusuf Road and the area in front of the Allahabad High Court will remain strict no-parking zones. Once the alternative parking facilities become operational, any vehicle found parked in these prohibited areas will be challaned.
On the notified roads, parking areas will be clearly marked, and vehicles parked outside these designated zones will be lifted using tow vans. This strict enforcement aims to ensure compliance and maximize the effectiveness of the new system.
Challenges and Official Assurance
A major challenge facing the initiative is widespread encroachment by vendors, temporary structures, and shop extensions on several major roads in Civil Lines. Despite repeated drives by the municipal corporation, these encroachments tend to resurface quickly, reducing effective road width and hampering both traffic movement and parking arrangements.
Civic officials acknowledge that sustained enforcement is crucial to prevent encroachment from undermining the new system. Additional Municipal Commissioner Arvind Rai emphasized that preparations are being made at all levels to roll out the parking policy smoothly from April. "Coordinated efforts would be made to keep the parking areas encroachment-free so that the initiative delivers long-term relief from traffic congestion in Civil Lines," he stated.
This proactive approach by the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation represents a concerted effort to transform the chaotic parking scenario in one of the city's busiest commercial and administrative hubs, promising improved traffic flow and enhanced urban management.
