Pre-monsoon showers on Wednesday left several areas of Mohali waterlogged, exposing the Municipal Corporation's (MC) lack of preparedness despite a review conducted just a day earlier. Rainwater accumulated at multiple locations in Phases 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7, as well as the Industrial Area, Phase 8. Waterlogging on Airport Road significantly slowed traffic movement during the morning commute, leading to snarl-ups at various points. Commuters heading to work or attending to other important tasks faced considerable difficulty reaching their destinations.
MC's Preparedness Questioned
On Tuesday, the MC Mayor, along with municipal officials, toured various areas of the city to review monsoon preparedness. Instructions were issued to the concerned departments to immediately clear blocked drains. However, the rain on Wednesday revealed that these measures were insufficient, as waterlogging occurred in many of the same areas that were inspected. The lack of effective action has drawn criticism from residents and commuters.
Drain Work Inaugurated in Jhampur
In a related development, MLA Kulwant Singh inaugurated a project to lay a pipeline to channel overflow from a village pond in Jhampur gram panchayat. During the rainy season, the pond often overflows, causing water to enter nearby fields and residential areas. The project, costing Rs 16 lakh, aims to mitigate this problem and prevent waterlogging in the surrounding areas. The work is expected to benefit local farmers and residents who have long struggled with flooding during the monsoon.
The pre-monsoon showers, while bringing relief from the heat, have highlighted the ongoing infrastructure challenges in Mohali. Residents are urging the MC to expedite drain cleaning and implement long-term solutions to prevent recurring waterlogging.
