Pune PMPML Electric Bus Engulfed in Flames in Chakan MIDC Incident
A Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) electric bus transporting approximately 50 passengers was completely destroyed by a sudden fire that broke out in the Chakan MIDC area on Thursday afternoon. The dramatic incident occurred while the bus was en route, but thanks to the swift actions of the driver and conductor, all passengers were successfully evacuated without any injuries reported.
Immediate Evacuation Prevents Tragedy
The driver first noticed smoke emanating from the front section of the vehicle as it approached the Chakan MIDC zone. Acting promptly, he maneuvered the bus to the side of the road and initiated an emergency evacuation procedure. With assistance from the bus conductor, all 50 passengers were safely escorted off the vehicle within moments.
"The vehicle caught fire within minutes and was completely damaged," stated a PMPML official, highlighting the rapid escalation of the situation after the evacuation.
Preliminary Investigation Points to Electrical Fault
According to initial information provided by PMPML authorities, the fire appears to have originated from a short circuit in the compressor wire of the electric bus. The vehicle was part of the Nigdi depot fleet and was operating a special service route for workers in the MIDC industrial areas.
"The e-bus belonged to the Nigdi depot. As per preliminary information, a short circuit in the compressor wire led to the fire. Further investigations are on," confirmed the PMPML official.
Route Details and Operational Context
The ill-fated bus had commenced its journey from Nigdi on Thursday morning, destined for Mahalunge MIDC. This particular service was specifically organized to transport workers within the MIDC industrial zones, underscoring the importance of reliable public transportation for industrial workforce mobility.
The incident raises important questions about:
- Electrical safety protocols in public transport vehicles
- Emergency response preparedness for electric vehicle fires
- Maintenance standards for PMPML's growing electric fleet
While the complete destruction of the bus represents significant material loss, the successful evacuation of all passengers stands as a testament to the crew's emergency response capabilities. PMPML officials have emphasized that comprehensive investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the electrical malfunction and to implement preventive measures for future operations.
