Punjab to Establish State-Level Water Testing Lab in Mohali's Sector 79

In a significant move to bolster drinking water quality monitoring and assist urban local bodies throughout Punjab, the Mohali Municipal Corporation (MC) is poised to establish a state-level water quality testing laboratory at the Sector 79 Water Works. This initiative aims to address critical gaps in the current system and ensure safer water supply for the public.

Addressing a Critical Infrastructure Gap

Mayor Amarjit Singh Sidhu shared detailed insights with the MC House on Monday, highlighting that the local government department currently lacks its own dedicated water quality testing facility. Until now, testing has been conducted through laboratories operated by the water supply and sanitation department. However, with water quality issues increasingly under the scrutiny of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and various courts, the workload on these existing laboratories has surged dramatically, necessitating a more robust solution.

Funding and Strategic Planning Under AMRUT 2.0

To enhance testing capacity and reinforce government efforts in providing safe and quality water, funds have been allocated under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme specifically for setting up dedicated water quality testing laboratories. Among the four such laboratories proposed under the local government department, one is strategically planned for Sector 79 in Mohali. This facility is designed to function as a comprehensive state-level hub, catering to the diverse needs of municipal corporations, municipal councils, nagar panchayats, and other urban local bodies across Punjab.

Capabilities and Infrastructure Details

The proposed laboratory will be equipped to conduct a wide range of tests, including:

  • Physical parameter testing to assess water appearance and properties.
  • Chemical analysis for detecting contaminants and impurities.
  • Bacteriological examinations to identify harmful microorganisms.
  • Waste water assessments to monitor pollution levels.
  • Heavy metal parameter testing to ensure safety from toxic elements.

According to the proposal, approximately 5,000 square meters of land will be required to establish this advanced facility. The Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board (PWSSB) will oversee the construction and implementation of the project. Since PWSSB does not possess its own land for this purpose, the MC House has been requested to approve the use of vacant land available at the Sector 79 Water Works site.

Next Steps and Approval Process

The proposal has been formally presented to the MC House for consideration through the MC commissioner, with the mayor's permission. This step marks a crucial phase in moving forward with the establishment of the laboratory, which is expected to significantly improve water quality monitoring and public health safeguards across Punjab. The initiative underscores a proactive approach to addressing environmental and health challenges, aligning with broader goals under the AMRUT 2.0 scheme to enhance urban infrastructure and services.
