Indian Railways Rolls Out Revised Ticket Cancellation Policy

The Indian Railways is implementing a comprehensive revision of its ticket cancellation rules, effective Wednesday, April 1, as per fresh directives issued by the Railway Board. The new regulations, designed with full transparency, will be rolled out across all zonal railways from April 1 to 15, including the East Central Railway (ECR).

Key Changes in Refund Eligibility

Under the updated framework, passengers will face stricter refund conditions for last-minute cancellations. Confirmed tickets cancelled within eight hours prior to the train's scheduled departure will no longer be eligible for any refund. This marks a significant shift from the previous policy, which allowed refunds for cancellations made up to four hours before departure.

Railway Board sources indicate that the revised policy aims to streamline ticketing operations and discourage last-minute cancellations, thereby enhancing the utilization of available berths and improving overall service efficiency.

Detailed Cancellation Charge Structure

According to Saraswati Chandra, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of the East Central Railway, the new cancellation charge structure is as follows:

  • Cancellations more than 72 hours before departure: Passengers will receive a refund after deduction of a flat cancellation charge, maintaining continuity with previous provisions.
  • Cancellations between 72 and 24 hours prior to departure: A deduction of 25% of the fare will apply.
  • Cancellations between 24 and eight hours before departure: A higher deduction of 50% of the fare will be enforced.

Enhanced Flexibility for Passengers

In a passenger-friendly initiative, the railways has introduced greater flexibility regarding boarding points. Passengers will now be permitted to change their boarding points up to 30 minutes before the train's departure. This provision offers added convenience for travelers facing last-minute alterations in their itineraries.

Chandra emphasized that the ECR has advised all passengers to thoroughly review the new rules before booking or cancelling tickets, as these changes will directly impact refund eligibility and travel planning.

The implementation of these revised rules is expected to bring about a more disciplined approach to ticket cancellations, ultimately benefiting the railway system and its passengers through improved operational management.
