PWD Initiates Major Renovation Project for Srirangam Yatri Nivas in Trichy

The Public Works Department (PWD) in Trichy has officially floated tenders for undertaking extensive maintenance and renovation work at the Yatri Nivas in Srirangam. The project is estimated to cost approximately Rs 8.1 crore, marking a significant investment in improving the facility's infrastructure.

Comprehensive Upgrade Plans Announced

According to PWD sources, the renovation will encompass a wide range of improvements aimed at enhancing the overall visitor experience. Key components of the project include:

  • Renovation of toilet facilities throughout the complex
  • Texture painting work to refresh interior and exterior surfaces
  • Repair of chambers and structural elements
  • Improvements to dormitory accommodations
  • Upgrades to water supply systems
  • Enhancement of sanitary facilities

Officials have emphasized that these improvements will significantly boost amenities and create a more comfortable environment for pilgrims visiting the sacred site.

Addressing Growing Maintenance Concerns

The renovation initiative comes in response to mounting concerns about the facility's deteriorating condition. The Yatri Nivas serves as a budget-friendly accommodation option for pilgrims visiting the renowned Sri Ranganathaswamy temple, making its upkeep particularly important for the religious tourism sector.

Constructed at a substantial cost of Rs 47 crore on approximately 6.4 acres along Panchakarai Road, the Yatri Nivas was inaugurated in 2015 by former Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa. Despite its relatively recent construction, the facility has faced maintenance challenges that this new project aims to address comprehensively.

Facility Details and Management Structure

Currently managed by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department, the Yatri Nivas complex features an impressive array of accommodations and amenities:

  1. Four separate dormitories for group accommodations
  2. 95 individual rooms for private stays
  3. 24 cottages offering more spacious lodging options
  4. Nine commercial shops for pilgrim convenience
  5. A dedicated restaurant facility

The complex has the capacity to accommodate nearly 900 pilgrims simultaneously, making it a crucial component of Srirangam's religious tourism infrastructure. Room tariffs currently range from Rs 500 to Rs 1,750, maintaining the facility's commitment to affordable pilgrim accommodation.

PWD officials have confirmed that the renovation work will proceed once contractors are selected through the tender process. The project represents a proactive approach to infrastructure maintenance that should significantly enhance the pilgrim experience at one of Tamil Nadu's most important religious destinations.
