Andhra Government Seeks to Transform Rushikonda Palace into Public Revenue Generator

The Andhra Pradesh state government is actively exploring strategic pathways to convert the Rushikonda palace in Visakhapatnam into a sustainable revenue-generating asset while simultaneously opening its doors to the public. A specially constituted cabinet sub-committee, tasked with examining the optimal utilization of the Rushikonda structures, convened for a significant meeting in Vijayawada on Tuesday, engaging in an extensive two-hour discussion to chart the future of this prominent property.

Committee Reviews Global Hospitality Proposals

The committee, led by Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh, meticulously examined detailed proposals submitted by several globally renowned hospitality institutions, including the prestigious Taj Group. The meeting saw virtual participation from ministers Payyavula Keshav and Dola Sri Bala Veeranjaneya Swamy, ensuring comprehensive governmental oversight. Following the cabinet sub-committee meeting, Minister Durgesh addressed the media, announcing that their formal recommendations would be submitted to Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu within the next couple of days.

The primary objective is to ensure these buildings do not remain idle as mere government property but are instead put to productive use by allowing public access and creating consistent revenue streams. Durgesh elaborated on the available land, stating, "As per Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms, approximately 2,400 square metres of land is available on the hilltop, with another 2,400 square metres at the foothill, totaling 4,800 square metres. The committee is developing a comprehensive plan based on these parameters to ensure proper and public-oriented utilization."

International Interest and Proposed Utilizations

Minister Durgesh further revealed that multiple reputed international hospitality groups have expressed keen interest in managing the Rushikonda property. Notable names include Taj Hotels, Atmosphere Core, The Leela Palace Hotels and Resorts, and FEMA Hotels. The committee also discussed plans to invite additional interested organizations to participate in the transparent selection process, ensuring competitive and beneficial outcomes for the state.

The government has received a variety of proposals from the hospitality sector outlining potential uses for the palace buildings. These proposals suggest transforming the site into:

  • A cultural center celebrating local heritage
  • A MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) center
  • A museum showcasing regional history and art
  • A hotel with some new constructions, blending luxury with accessibility

"We have thoroughly examined all submitted proposals and will present the key suggestions to the chief minister. Our final course of action will align with the CM's advice," Durgesh affirmed, highlighting the collaborative decision-making process.

Addressing Financial Burden and Next Steps

Minister Durgesh pointed out a significant financial strain, noting that the government is currently compelled to expend nearly ₹25 lakh per month on maintenance and electricity charges for the palace. He attributed this substantial burden on the state exchequer to "ill-conceived decisions" made by the previous administration, underscoring the urgency for a viable, revenue-positive solution.

A final report, incorporating findings and discussions from all five meetings of the cabinet sub-committee, will be compiled and submitted to Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in the near future. Based on the chief minister's directives, the matter will then be presented before the state cabinet for a conclusive decision. The meeting was attended by senior officials, including Special Chief Secretary (Tourism) Ajay Jain, Executive Directors Padmavathi and Seshagiri Rao, and Superintending Engineer Eswarayya, ensuring administrative expertise guided the deliberations.
