UP Police Wins SKOCH Gold Award 2025 for AI-Powered Suicide Prevention Tech
UP Police's AI initiative wins SKOCH Gold Award 2025

The Uttar Pradesh Police has been honoured with a prestigious national award for its groundbreaking use of technology and artificial intelligence in public safety and life-saving initiatives.

National Recognition for Tech-Driven Policing

On Saturday, the Uttar Pradesh Police was presented with the SKOCH Award-2025 in the Gold Category. The honour was conferred at the 105th SKOCH Summit held in New Delhi, which revolved around the theme of "Governing Viksit Bharat." The award specifically recognises two innovative projects: the Meta Suicidal Alert initiative run by the UP Police Social Media Centre and the technological prowess of the Integrated Command and Control Center (ICCC) established during the Mahakumbh 2025.

The award was presented to Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna. Receiving it on his behalf were nominated officers: IPS Amit Kumar, the former In-charge of the Mahakumbh-25 ICCC, and Rahul Srivastava, PRO to the DGP, who accepted it for the Meta Suicidal Alert project. They were joined by Satya Yadav, Director of Outreach for South Asia at Facebook (Meta).

Aligning with the CM's Vision: AI and Tech as Priority

DGP Rajeev Krishna stated that this accolade is a direct result of the force's commitment to the Chief Minister's vision. Priority is being given to integrating technology and artificial intelligence into modern policing. The SKOCH Award, he emphasised, is a strong national-level validation of UP Police's technological innovations, excellence in governance, and its impactful work in safeguarding citizens.

"UP Police is also effectively implementing technological innovations," the DGP noted, highlighting the force's proactive approach.

How the Life-Saving 'Meta Suicidal Alert' Works

The award-winning Meta Suicidal Alert mechanism is a collaborative effort between the UP Police Social Media Centre and Meta. This system is designed for rapid intervention in potential suicide cases.

Here is how the process unfolds:

  • When a user posts content indicating suicidal thoughts on platforms like Facebook or Instagram, Meta's systems detect it.
  • An immediate alert is sent via email and phone call to the 24x7 desk at the UP Police Social Media Centre in the Police Headquarters.
  • This dedicated desk, integrated with the UP STF server, swiftly works to identify the victim's location.
  • Once located, the information is passed to the police department of the concerned district without delay.
  • The local police then contact the individual and their family to provide urgent assistance, rescue, and initial counselling, while also trying to resolve the underlying issue.

Tangible Impact: Over 1,800 Lives Rescued

The effectiveness of this AI-powered initiative is reflected in hard data. According to official figures, in the three-year period from January 1, 2023, to December 31, 2025, a total of 1,805 individuals were safely rescued through this system. The breakdown includes 1,389 men and 416 women, showcasing its wide reach.

Building on this success, DGP Rajeev Krishna has introduced a further directive to ensure sustained support. He has ordered that all cases of suicide attempts must receive follow-up counselling. This will be facilitated through district Mission Shakti centres and the 1090 tele-counselling service, ensuring victims and their families get continued psychological support.

The SKOCH Award for the Mahakumbh ICCC further underscores the department's capability in managing mega-events through a centralised, tech-enabled command system, ensuring coordination and safety on a massive scale.

This dual recognition marks a significant milestone for the Uttar Pradesh Police, positioning it as a leading force in India actively harnessing cutting-edge technology and AI for proactive, life-saving governance.
