Visakhapatnam Tops Swachh Andhra Rankings, Naidu Calls for Third-Party Audits
Visakhapatnam Leads Swachh Andhra Rankings, Naidu Demands Transparency

Visakhapatnam District Clinches Top Spot in Swachh Andhra Cleanliness Rankings

In a significant development for urban sanitation, Visakhapatnam district has emerged as the leader in the latest Swachh Andhra rankings, showcasing exemplary performance in waste management and public hygiene initiatives. The coastal district secured the coveted first position, followed closely by Vizianagaram and Guntur districts in second and third place respectively.

Transparency and Accountability in Future Evaluations

During a comprehensive review meeting of the Swarna Andhra-Swachh Andhra programme held in Vijayawada on Friday, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu proposed a crucial reform for future assessments. He strongly recommended that upcoming cleanliness rankings be conducted by independent third-party agencies to ensure greater objectivity and transparency in the evaluation process.

The current rankings were determined based on multiple critical parameters including door-to-door waste collection efficiency, proper segregation of wet and dry waste, availability of individual household toilets, and compliance with ODF Plus standards. Unfortunately, Sri Sathya Sai, Parvathipuram Manyam and Alluri Sitarama Raju (ASR) districts occupied the bottom three positions in the assessment.

Ambitious Waste Management Targets and Infrastructure Development

Chairing the high-level meeting, Chief Minister Naidu directed officials to implement a rigorous time-bound action plan to achieve established sanitation targets. He emphasized strict accountability measures, warning that failure to meet objectives would trigger thorough scrutiny and corrective interventions.

Naidu issued specific directives for infrastructure enhancement, including:

  • Construction of additional public toilets in municipalities where needed
  • Establishment of waste-to-energy plants within designated zones
  • Expedited clearance of old dumping grounds with conversion into green spaces
  • Priority transformation of dumping sites located near villages and towns

Impressive Waste Clearance Statistics and Future Goals

Officials presented encouraging data to the chief minister, revealing that approximately 114 lakh tonnes of the 153 lakh tonnes of urban waste generated since June 2024 has been successfully cleared. Naidu mandated complete clearance of the remaining waste by June and ordered the removal of 10 lakh metric tonnes of accumulated waste from rural areas.

The chief minister set ambitious targets for universal coverage, demanding that door-to-door waste collection and processing reach 100% across the state. He suggested strategic coordination with MARKFED for effective compost marketing to create revenue streams from waste management.

Comprehensive Environmental and Institutional Initiatives

Naidu proposed innovative solutions for wastewater management, recommending community soak pits connected to magic drains to address drainage issues while simultaneously improving groundwater recharge. The administration issued detailed guidelines for government welfare hostels and residential schools covering multiple sustainability aspects:

  1. Implementation of systematic waste segregation practices
  2. Installation of rooftop solar systems for renewable energy
  3. Adoption of net-zero environmental practices
  4. Substantial increase in green cover through plantation drives
  5. Maintenance of hygienic kitchen facilities

Expanding Monitoring and Revenue Generation from Waste

The chief minister ordered significant expansion of air quality monitoring infrastructure, with plans to add 53 manual stations to the existing 83 monitoring locations across the state. Officials briefed Naidu on ongoing measures to curb single-use plastics and detailed current waste collection operations.

Presently, 633 specialized Swachh Rath vehicles collect approximately 125 tonnes of dry waste daily across Andhra Pradesh. Innovative Gobardhan units and Green Shops are successfully converting this collected waste into revenue-generating products, creating a circular economy model.

Looking toward long-term environmental goals, Naidu called for increasing the state's green cover from the current 31.33% to 37% by 2030, with an even more ambitious target of 50% green cover by 2047.
