Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma handed out seed funds of Rs 10,000 each to more than 53,000 women on Sunday. The distribution took place in Barak Valley as part of the Mukhyamantri Mahila Udyamita Abhiyan (MMUA). Sarma described this move as a Sankranti-eve gift for the women of the region.
Empowering Women for Self-Reliance
Sarma emphasized that the initiative aims to strengthen women's entrepreneurship. He said it paves the way for an atmanirbhar or self-reliant future. The chief minister shared updates about the event on social media platform X. He posted photographs and wrote about the disbursement.
"A Sankranti eve gift for my sisters in Barak Valley!" Sarma stated in his post. He noted that over 53,000 women will start their journey toward creating an Atmanirbhar future through the MMUA seed fund. The government is empowering approximately 40 lakh women in Assam to become Lakhpati Didis, he added.
Statewide Distribution Efforts
Over the past week, Sarma has been distributing MMUA cheques at various public events across Assam. Earlier distribution programs occurred in Howraghat LAC in Karbi Anglong district and in Tezpur. The state government plans more rounds of funding in different districts.
Officials expect the MMUA scheme to generate sustained self-employment opportunities. They believe it will lift rural household incomes in the coming years. The Assam government has positioned this initiative as a key pillar in its women-led development agenda.
