Delhi Mandates Electric Autos from 2027, E-Two-Wheelers from 2028
The Delhi government has unveiled a new electric vehicle (EV) policy that will require all new auto-rickshaws to be electric from 2027 and all new two-wheelers to be electric from 2028. The policy aims to curb air pollution and promote sustainable transport in the capital.
Subsidies Offered in First Year
Under the policy, the Delhi government will provide a subsidy of Rs 30,000 to all electric two-wheeler purchasers and Rs 50,000 to all three-wheeler buyers in the first year of implementation. According to Gyanendra Keshri, who reported the story, the subsidies are intended to ease the transition for buyers and boost EV adoption.
Details of the Policy
The policy was announced on 29 June 2026. It sets a clear timeline: from 2027, only electric three-wheelers (autos) can be registered as new vehicles, and from 2028, only electric two-wheelers will be allowed for new registrations. Existing petrol or diesel vehicles can continue to operate, but no new fossil-fuel versions will be registered after the cut-off dates.
Impact and Goals
The Delhi government expects this policy to significantly reduce vehicular emissions, which are a major contributor to the city's poor air quality. By mandating electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers, the policy targets two of the most common modes of transport in Delhi. The subsidies are designed to offset the higher upfront cost of EVs, making them more accessible to the public.
