Kurukshetra district has surged to the top position in Haryana for its successful implementation of the Prime Minister's Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana. The district has achieved a significant milestone by installing rooftop solar plants on 3,807 houses, marking a major stride towards renewable energy adoption and energy self-reliance for its residents.
District Surpasses Expectations in Solar Drive
The achievement is part of a targeted mission to install 4,677 solar plants by March 2026. With the current installations, Kurukshetra has already accomplished an impressive 81.40% of its goal, firmly establishing itself as the state leader. The progress was reviewed in a meeting chaired by Kurukshetra Deputy Commissioner Vishram Kumar Meena at the Mini Secretariat on Friday. The district-level committee meeting saw a detailed presentation by Madan Gopal Jindal, Superintending Engineer of the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam (UHBVN), who outlined the scheme's progress and operational aspects.
Out of a total of 5,631 applications received from the district, the commissioning of plants in 3,807 households demonstrates a high conversion rate and strong public interest. DC Meena emphasized that the benefits of the PM Surya Ghar scheme must permeate every eligible household in the district. He commended UHBVN officials for their systematic implementation and extensive public awareness campaigns.
Financial Benefits and Subsidies for Households
The scheme offers substantial financial incentives, making solar power accessible to a wide economic spectrum. Under the central government subsidy, beneficiaries receive:
- Rs 30,000 for a 1 kW system
- Rs 60,000 for a 2 kW system
- Rs 78,000 for a 3 kW rooftop solar plant
Adding to this, the Haryana government provides extra assistance for families with an annual income below Rs 1.80 lakh. This state aid includes Rs 25,000 for a 1 kW system and Rs 50,000 for a 2 kW system. Explaining the dual advantage, DC Meena highlighted that households can avail of up to 300 units of free electricity every month, receive combined subsidies of up to Rs 1.10 lakh, and even earn revenue by selling surplus power back to the grid.
Expanded Eligibility and Awareness Push
In a significant expansion, the DC announced that Group Housing Societies and Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) are now eligible for financial assistance. They can avail Rs 18,000 per kW (up to 500 kW) from both central and state governments for installing solar plants for common facilities like streetlights and drinking water pumps, including provisions for EV charging stations.
To ensure the scheme's success reaches every corner, DC Meena directed all government departments to clear their pending electricity dues, which amount to nearly Rs 11.95 crore, at the earliest. He also instructed power department officials to organize comprehensive awareness camps in every major village across all blocks. This directive builds upon the existing efforts where 303 awareness camps were successfully conducted between October and January to promote the scheme.
The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is not just an electricity subsidy program; it is a transformative initiative promoting environmental conservation and national energy self-reliance.
