An 11-year-old girl was abducted from a footpath in south Delhi, raped, and murdered. The accused, a cab driver, was injured in a police encounter on Tuesday when he allegedly tried to flee after snatching a policeman's pistol.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday when the girl was sleeping beside her family on a pavement near Chattarpur Metro station in Mehrauli. The accused, identified as 29-year-old Bashu Kumar Singh, allegedly abducted her, sexually assaulted her inside his car, and then drove her to a forested patch near the Faridabad-Gurugram road, where he killed her and concealed her body under stones.
Police Investigation and Arrest
Police tracked Singh through CCTV footage and technical surveillance, arresting him within six hours of the crime. A case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the POCSO Act was registered against him. During sustained interrogation, the accused confessed to the abduction, sexual assault, and murder.
Encounter During Crime Scene Recreation
On Tuesday, police took Singh to recreate the crime scene at a stretch on Mandi Road near Fatehpur Beri. According to a senior police officer, Singh allegedly attempted to flee and snatched the service pistol of a policeman. "In the scuffle that followed, the accused tried to flee. Police fired at him in self-defence and to prevent his escape, hit him in the leg," the officer said. Singh was immediately overpowered and taken to a nearby hospital, where his condition is stated to be stable. Legal proceedings regarding the escape attempt are being initiated.

The brutal crime has sparked outrage among local residents, who have demanded stricter security measures in the area. Police emphasized that technical surveillance and CCTV analysis played a crucial role in solving the case swiftly. A police source said, "After committing the crime, the accused was returning to the same location, but fled after watching police teams nearby. Teams tracked his movements, and he was arrested within six hours after the crime."
