In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking via railways, the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Coimbatore confiscated a substantial 13 kilograms of cannabis from a moving long-distance train on Friday. The seizure highlights ongoing efforts to curb the use of trains for narcotics smuggling across states.
Special Team Boards Express Train
A dedicated squad formed by the Coimbatore GRP specifically to target ganja smuggling through the rail network swung into action. Their operation focused on the Patna–Ernakulam Express, a key train connecting north and south India. The team boarded the train at Tirupur railway station and commenced a thorough search of passenger belongings across compartments.
Abandoned Bags in General Compartment
During the meticulous search, the police's attention was drawn to some unclaimed baggage in the unreserved general compartment. The bags were seemingly abandoned, with no passenger coming forward to claim ownership despite inquiries. This raised immediate suspicion among the officers present.
Upon opening the bags for inspection, the police discovered the concealed contraband – a large quantity of ganja (cannabis). The narcotics were immediately taken into custody. Following the seizure, the consignment was transported to the Government Railway Police station located at Coimbatore Junction for further formalities and analysis.
Case Registered, Hunt for Peddlers On
The GRP has officially registered a case in connection with the incident. A full-fledged investigation is currently underway to identify and apprehend the smugglers or peddlers behind this attempt. Authorities are examining various leads, including passenger lists and CCTV footage from relevant stations, to trace the individuals who abandoned the drug-laden bags.
This seizure underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in monitoring the vast railway network used for illicit activities. It also serves as a warning to those involved in the drug trade about the increased vigil on major train routes.
