Two deputy commissioners of Kolkata Police have been suspended for posting “controversial” content on social media, a senior officer confirmed on Saturday. The action followed an internal review that identified violations of social media guidelines by the officers.
Suspended Officers Identified
The suspended officers are Deputy Commissioner of Police III (North Division) Bidhan Saha and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Port Division II) Partha Pratim Das. According to sources, the suspension stems from alleged remarks made by the two officers in a police WhatsApp group in 2025.
“One of the suspended officers had allegedly made objectionable remarks against Suvendu Adhikari, who was the Leader of Opposition at the time and is now the chief minister, while the other officer had reportedly supported those comments,” the senior officer said.
Internal Inquiry and Disciplinary Action
Following complaints about the posts, Kolkata Police launched an inquiry and subsequently decided to suspend the two officers. “Further departmental proceedings against the two officers would follow,” the officer added, indicating that a formal disciplinary process is underway.
Kolkata Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Nand had previously advised all officers to exercise caution when making statements or posting content on social media. Nand emphasized that inappropriate communication from force members could negatively impact society and directed personnel to show restraint while using online platforms.
Guidelines for Social Media Use
The senior officer reiterated that police personnel, especially senior officers, have been advised to be careful while using social media. “Any content that may adversely affect public perception or the image of the force is examined as per rules,” he said. The suspension underscores the department’s commitment to enforcing its social media policy and maintaining discipline among its ranks.
