Three Wildlife Smuggling Cases Reported at Kempegowda Airport
Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport has witnessed three wildlife smuggling cases in the past three months, from April to June 2026. This marks a decrease compared to the same period last year, when six cases were recorded between April and June 2025, according to airport officials.
Details of the Seizures
In April 2026, authorities seized green tree pythons as part of a larger consignment. The snakes, native to New Guinea and parts of Australia, are popular in the exotic pet trade. Another case involved a Goeldi's marmoset, a small monkey predominantly found in the South American continent. The airport's customs and wildlife departments have been actively monitoring cargo and passenger baggage to curb illegal wildlife trafficking.
Impact and Enforcement
The reduction in cases suggests increased vigilance and enforcement at the airport. However, wildlife smuggling remains a concern, with traffickers using various methods to conceal animals. Officials urge travelers to report suspicious activity and remind that smuggling protected species carries severe penalties under Indian law.
