A shocking incident of sexual assault on a minor has come to light in Kolkata, sending waves of anger and concern through the city. A three-year-old girl was allegedly assaulted on Saturday evening near the rail bridge at Chaul Patty in the Beleghata area.
Details of the Disturbing Assault
The young victim, who resides with her family in a settlement close to the railway tracks, was playing when the incident occurred. According to police and local accounts, a man familiar to the girl's family took her to a poorly-lit spot near the tracks. He reportedly lured her under the pretext of showing affection and promising to buy her treats.
The situation turned sinister soon after. The child began crying loudly, which initially drew the attention of some locals. When they approached and questioned the man about the reason for the girl's distress, he remained silent. Unsuspecting at that moment, the locals left the spot.
Accused Flees, Child Found Bleeding
The girl's cries, however, grew more intense and desperate. When locals returned to the spot upon hearing the louder screams, they saw the man fleeing the scene, leaving the child alone near the railway tracks. Shortly afterwards, the girl's family members reached the location and made a horrifying discovery.
They found the three-year-old bleeding and immediately rushed her to the CNMC Hospital for urgent medical treatment. Following the medical attention, the traumatized family approached the Beleghata police station to formally lodge a complaint about the brutal attack.
Arrest and Legal Action Under POCSO Act
Acting swiftly on the complaint, police investigators traced and detained the accused man. As the crime occurred in an area under railway jurisdiction, the Beleghata police subsequently handed over the accused to the Sealdah Government Railway Police (GRP).
The GRP took decisive legal action. They arrested the accused, registered a formal case under the stringent Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and produced him before the Sealdah court. The court, after the proceedings, ordered the accused to be remanded to judicial custody.
This grave incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of children and the pervasive threat of sexual violence. It underscores the critical importance of community vigilance and the swift application of laws like the POCSO Act to ensure justice for the youngest and most defenseless victims.
