9 Suspected Rohingya Held in Assam's Cachar While Trying to Illegally Enter Bangladesh
9 Suspected Rohingya Detained at Assam Toll Gate

In a significant interception, Assam Police on Friday detained nine individuals suspected to be Rohingya nationals at a key toll plaza in Cachar district. The group was allegedly attempting to travel illegally towards Bangladesh when they were caught during a routine check.

Interception at Kalaincherra Toll Plaza

The operation took place at the Kalaincherra toll gate on National Highway-6, which connects Silchar with Shillong. Personnel from the Kalaincherra police outpost were conducting a 'naka' or checkpoint inspection. They received assistance from members of the Katigorah Sanatani Sangha, a local Hindu organisation. The nine suspects were travelling in two separate autorickshaws when they were stopped.

Inconsistent Statements Raise Suspicion

During preliminary questioning, the detainees provided conflicting accounts about their identities and the purpose of their journey, which immediately alerted the police. This inconsistency has become a central point of the investigation. The individuals are currently under custody at the Kalaincherra police outpost as authorities work to verify their claims.

Multi-Angle Investigation Launched

Officials have confirmed that a thorough verification of the group's citizenship status is now underway. The probe is examining multiple serious angles. Potential illegal infiltration and possible links to human trafficking networks are key focuses. Police are also digging deeper to find out if any middlemen or organised syndicates facilitated the movement of these individuals. Appropriate legal action will be initiated once the investigation concludes.

The incident caused a brief spell of tension in the area, with local residents gathering at the spot. Law enforcement officials managed the situation, ensuring it did not escalate further.
