In a dramatic turn of events, a junior resident doctor from Lucknow's prestigious King George's Medical University (KGMU), who had been evading arrest for over two weeks, was finally apprehended by the police. The accused, 31-year-old Rameezuddin alias Ramiz, had been absconding since December 23, employing extreme measures to avoid detection, officials revealed on Friday.
The Elusive Fugitive's Strategy
Police officials stated that Rameezuddin deliberately adopted a low-tech lifestyle to escape electronic surveillance. He intentionally avoided using a mobile phone and refrained from conducting any banking or digital transactions. This careful avoidance was aimed at leaving no digital footprint for investigators to follow.
Surviving solely on a limited amount of cash, the accused remained constantly on the move for more than two weeks. He changed locations frequently, seeking shelter across western and central Uttar Pradesh and even in the national capital. His alleged hideouts included places in Shamli, Delhi, Muzaffarnagar, Bareilly, and Shahjahanpur.
The Plan to Flee and the Police Crackdown
Preliminary police inquiries suggested a more alarming dimension to the case: Rameezuddin was allegedly exploring ways to leave India. This discovery prompted law enforcement to accelerate coercive legal measures against him.
The breakthrough in the manhunt came when authorities initiated proceedings to attach his properties under legal provisions meant for absconding accused. Notices warning of imminent confiscation were pasted at his known premises earlier this week. This legal move created significant pressure on the fugitive doctor.
The Final Chapter: A Foiled Surrender Plan
The property seizure tactic proved effective. Soon after the notices were served, Rameezuddin traveled to Lucknow by bus, arriving at the Kaiserbagh bus station. His plan, as pieced together by officials, was to first find a lawyer and then surrender in court.
However, informers alerted the Chowk police about his presence and intentions. The police moved swiftly, foiling his surrender plan and placing him under arrest before he could reach the court.
