The streets near Ahmedabad's Memco area have become the grim focal point of a severe road safety crisis following two devastating fatal accidents within a span of just two days. These incidents have starkly exposed the dangers of rash and negligent driving, particularly involving heavy vehicles, on the city's bustling roads.
First Tragedy: A Family Shattered on Memco-Kalupur Road
In a heartbreaking incident late on Sunday night, a family's routine journey turned into a nightmare. Rajendrakumar Jagdishkumar (31), a resident of Ludhiana, Punjab, was riding his scooter with his wife, Sonali Rajendrakumar (30), and their young daughter, Lakshita. As they were near the Arvind Mill gate on the Memco-Kalupur road, a truck allegedly speeding from behind rammed into their two-wheeler.
The violent impact threw all three occupants onto the road. While Rajendrakumar suffered injuries to his right knee and his daughter sustained minor injuries near her nose, Sonali bore the brutal brunt of the collision. Reports indicate that the truck's tyre ran over her head, causing critical injuries. The family was rushed to Asarwa Civil Hospital, where doctors, tragically, declared Sonali dead on arrival.
The E Division traffic police have taken swift action, booking the truck driver, identified as Manjesh Kumar, in connection with the fatal crash.
Second Incident: AMC Truck Claims a Life Near BRTS Stand
Merely a day before this family's tragedy, another life was cut short in the same vicinity. On Saturday, Vimal Sadhu (42), a resident of Danapith, was riding his two-wheeler near the Memco BRTS bus stand opposite Shayona Complex. In a separate but equally alarming event, a truck belonging to the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) allegedly hit him.
The driver, Sujan Das from Nikol, was reportedly driving in a rash and negligent manner. The collision caused severe injuries to Sadhu, who later succumbed to them during treatment. This incident has raised additional concerns about the conduct of vehicles operating under civic authority.
Police Action and Mounting Concerns
The E Division traffic police have registered cases in both accidents and initiated thorough investigations. However, the consecutive nature of these fatal events has ignited serious public anxiety and debate.
Local residents and commuters are now urgently calling for stricter enforcement of traffic rules, better regulation of heavy vehicle speeds, and enhanced road safety measures in and around the Memco industrial zone and connecting roads.
