Three junior doctors from Aligarh Muslim University's Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) have been suspended on charges of indiscipline and misconduct under the AMU Students' Conduct and Discipline Rules. The suspension follows a clash between patient attendants and doctors on Tuesday night, which sparked protests on the campus.
Details of the Suspension
Authorities announced on Thursday that Dr. Mohammad Talha Khurshid, Dr. Shahvez, and Dr. Aqeel Hussain have been barred from entering the university and medical college premises until further notice. An inquiry into the incident is currently underway, as confirmed by university officials. AMU Proctor Mohammad Naved Khan stated, "The three doctors have been suspended pending investigation."
Allegations and Legal Action
According to suspension letters issued to the doctors, the incident occurred on the night of May 5 at JNMC's emergency trauma centre. The letters allege that the junior doctors assaulted patient attendants, misbehaved with police and members of the proctorial team, and created chaos inside the CMO room. Despite repeated warnings, the accused doctors allegedly led an unlawful assembly, damaged property, obstructed officials from performing their duties, and threatened police personnel.
A First Information Report (FIR) was lodged at Civil Lines police station based on a complaint by Afazal Ahmed, an attendant of a patient. The three doctors were booked under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 109 (attempt to murder).
Protests by Junior Doctors
In response to the FIR and suspensions, several junior doctors staged a dharna on the JNMC campus, demanding the withdrawal of cases against their colleagues and revocation of the suspensions. Resident Doctors' Association vice-president Akhatar Ali alleged that the doctors were also assaulted during the incident. "Our doctors were attacked too. We submitted a complaint seeking action against the attendants involved, but no case has been registered so far," he said.
The university administration has assured that a thorough investigation will be conducted to ascertain the facts. Meanwhile, the suspended doctors remain barred from campus activities pending the outcome of the inquiry.
