An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Police died of a cardiac arrest while on duty in Karnataka's Davanagere district on Tuesday, according to officials.

Incident Details

The ASI, identified as 55-year-old Basavaraj, collapsed at the Davanagere police station around 10:30 am. He was rushed to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead. Officials said Basavaraj had been complaining of chest pain for the past few days but did not seek medical attention.

Police Response

Senior police officers expressed grief over the sudden demise. Davanagere Superintendent of Police Hanumantharaya said, "Basavaraj was a dedicated officer who served the department for over 30 years. His untimely death is a great loss." The department has announced a financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh to the bereaved family.

Health Concerns

This incident highlights increasing cases of cardiac arrests among police personnel, often attributed to high stress and irregular work hours. In 2023, Karnataka recorded at least 10 such deaths among police officers. The state police have initiated health check-up camps and stress management programs.
