Golaghat Police Launch Major Anti-Poaching Drive in Assam's Brahmaputra Sandbars
Assam Police Conduct Intensive Anti-Poaching Operations in Golaghat

In a significant crackdown on wildlife crime, the Golaghat district police in Assam executed intensive anti-poaching operations across multiple sensitive locations on Friday. The coordinated drives targeted critical habitats, including forest areas and riverine sandbars along the Brahmaputra, which are frequently exploited by poachers.

Key Locations of the Police Operation

The simultaneous operations were carried out in areas identified as wildlife movement corridors and poaching hotspots. The teams focused on Diffloo Pathar, Kancha Chapori, and Bhakat Chapori. These ecologically significant Brahmaputra sandbars serve as seasonal homes for various species of birds, deer, and other fauna, making them vulnerable to illegal hunting activities.

Statement from Senior Police Official

Golaghat SSP Rajen Singh detailed the scope and intent of the operation. "We conducted intensive anti-poaching operations today across several sensitive locations in the district," Singh stated. He emphasized that the teams covered both forest patches and river sandbars where wildlife populations are present.

"These sandbars and nearby forest patches are critical wildlife corridors," the SSP added. "Poachers take advantage of the difficult terrain and relative isolation to carry out illegal activities. Our operations today were aimed at disrupting such activities and sending a strong message to those involved in wildlife crime."

On-Ground Actions and Objectives

The police squads conducted thorough searches of the suspected zones. Their activities included:

  • Scouring for evidence of poaching such as traps, snares, and illegal camps.
  • Questioning individuals found in restricted forest areas.
  • Increasing surveillance in zones that require regular monitoring to prevent illegal hunting.

The initiative underscores a proactive approach to protect the region's rich biodiversity. The Brahmaputra's chapori ecosystems are vital for seasonal wildlife, and their protection is crucial for conservation efforts in Assam. This operation highlights the ongoing challenges and the determined response from law enforcement to safeguard vulnerable animal populations from criminal networks.
