Assam Student Attacked at Tribal University Hostel in Madhya Pradesh
A serious incident of violence has shaken the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University campus in Amarkantak. A 22-year-old postgraduate student from Assam faced a brutal assault allegedly by five of his peers at the university hostel.
Immediate Action Taken Against Accused
University authorities responded swiftly to the Tuesday afternoon attack. The disciplinary committee expelled all five accused students on Wednesday. Police registered an FIR against them shortly before midnight the same day.
Anuppur Sub-Divisional Officer of Police Naveen Tiwari confirmed the legal action. The accused face charges under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. These include voluntarily causing hurt, obscene acts and words, criminal intimidation, and common intention.
Details of the Assault Emerge
The victim, Hiros Jyoti Das, studies economics at IGNTU. According to his complaint, the attack occurred around 4 pm on Tuesday as he returned to his hostel room from the washroom.
The accused allegedly questioned Das about his origins and purpose at the university. When Das explained he had been studying there for three years, the situation turned violent.
Das sustained injuries to multiple facial areas including his eyes, lips, nose, and temples. His FIR mentions being struck with a bracelet during the assault. He has identified the five accused students by name in his formal complaint.
Investigation Underway, Political Reactions Surface
Police are actively investigating whether racial slurs were used during the incident. Officer Tiwari stated the motive would become clearer after questioning the accused students. Authorities await Das's medico-legal certificate report for further evidence.
The Madhya Pradesh Congress has strongly criticized the ruling BJP over the incident. Opposition Leader Umang Singhar issued a statement alleging racist remarks preceded the physical assault.
Singhar made serious allegations about campus conditions. He claimed some youths linked to the ruling party consume drugs on campus and assault students. The opposition leader accused the university administration of taking only token disciplinary actions.
Context of Recent Student Violence
This assault follows closely on another tragic incident involving a northeastern student. Last month, Anjel Chakma from Tripura died in Dehradun after a knife attack at a private university.
Chakma's death sparked national outrage and renewed calls for stronger laws against hate crimes. The 24-year-old MBA student underwent 17 days of treatment before succumbing to his injuries on December 26.
These back-to-back incidents have raised serious questions about student safety across Indian campuses. Many are demanding more effective measures to protect students from regional or ethnic discrimination.
Attempts to reach both the victim Das and IGNTU Registrar Hari Moorthy for additional comments proved unsuccessful. The university community awaits further developments in this disturbing case.
