Alipore Court Witnesses Heated Bail Hearing for Swarup Biswas
Kolkata: The Alipore court on Thursday saw a tense legal confrontation as Swarup Biswas, former president of the Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India (FCTWEI), applied for bail after spending 14 days in police custody. Biswas, who is the brother of former state minister Arup Biswas, is facing serious charges including extortion, molestation, and violations under the Arms Act.
Defense Arguments
Presenting the bail plea, Swarup’s defense counsel argued that the police investigation had not yielded any results during the two-week custody period. The lawyer pointed out that despite initial claims by the state, no extorted money or weapons had been recovered. Addressing allegations of misappropriation of federation funds, the defense maintained that Rs 1.5 crore was collected transparently as donations, supported by valid receipts.
Prosecution's Opposition
Strongly opposing the bail application, Alipore police court public prosecutor Sourin Ghosal argued that the police had uncovered substantial evidence of an extensive extortion racket operated by the accused through intimidation.
