The mysterious death of a 36-year-old migrant worker from West Bengal while in police custody in Goa has sparked allegations of murder and demands for a high-level investigation. The incident has left a family in Taki, North 24 Parganas, shattered and questioning the safety of Bengalis in other states.
Arrest and Tragic Timeline of Events
Debananda Sana, a mason and resident of Ramakrishnapally in Taki municipality, was working in the Fakir Varam Galli area of Vasco da Gama, Goa. According to official reports, the Vasco da Gama Police arrested him on December 25 on suspicion of theft.
The very next day, on December 26, his family was informed that he had been admitted to the Institute of Psychiatry and Human Behaviour in Bambolim. His condition was serious, and he was subsequently shifted to the Goa Medical College. Despite medical attention, Debananda Sana succumbed to his injuries and died on December 30.
Family's Allegations and Demand for Justice
The grieving family received the news of his death over a phone call. They have vehemently alleged foul play, stating that Debananda was beaten to death while in police custody. His sister, Ruma Mondal, who spoke to him on the morning of his arrest, reported seeing bruises and injury marks on the soles of his feet, which she claims are clear signs of torture.
"The police killed him," she asserted. His mother, Kamala Sana, repeatedly lost consciousness upon receiving her only son's body. "Our family survived on my son's earnings. Why did the Goa police arrest him, and how did he die in custody?" she cried out, raising concerns about the safety of Bengali migrants.
Body Brought Home, Political Intervention Ensues
In a state of shock and seeking justice, the family approached local Trinamool Congress functionaries. With the initiative of local representatives in Taki and the intervention of the Basirhat District Police, Debananda's body was finally brought to Kolkata airport on Saturday and taken to his home in Taki for last rites.
The family has stated their intention to approach the Chief Minister to seek a fair probe. They are demanding an immediate and impartial investigation against the jail and police officials involved, insisting that those responsible for the alleged custodial murder be held accountable.
The case has highlighted the vulnerabilities faced by migrant workers and raised serious questions about police procedures and custodial safety in the country.
