Bhubaneswar Man Arrested in Neighbourhood Assault Case

Bhubaneswar: City police on Saturday arrested a 21-year-old man for alleged armed assault and trespass following a police complaint filed by Arupananda Biswal of Dharma Vihar. The accused was identified as Udit Kumar Behera.

Background of the Dispute

Police sources said the case stemmed from a dispute between two neighbours in Barabari, Dharma Vihar. The complainant’s house is opposite the house of Bishwamohan Behera. Earlier, Bishwamohan had dug up a portion of the road in front of his house for drainage and earthwork, which was opposed by Arupananda.

Escalation of Tensions

On Thursday, workers engaged by Bishwamohan allegedly resumed work. Arupananda’s wife protested against the digging. Despite her protest, the work continued, a police officer said. On Friday night, Bishwamohan, his wife and their son Akash allegedly armed with sticks, assaulted Arupananda’s family, triggering a heated confrontation. Udit, their neighbour, joined them.

“Udit and others forcefully entered Biswal’s home and attacked Arupananda and his brother Hadibandhu with sticks and a sword. When Arupananda’s wife protested against the assault, she was also beaten up,” said a police officer.

The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code and are investigating further. No arrests have been made of the other accused as of now.
