At least 12 people were injured on Saturday when police opened fire in several cities of Bihar as protests over the alleged NEET paper leak turned violent. The demonstrations erupted after students demanded strict action against those responsible for the leak and a re-examination.
Violent Clashes in Multiple Cities
In Patna, protesters threw stones at police vehicles and set fire to tires on major roads. Similar scenes unfolded in Gaya, Muzaffarpur, and Bhagalpur. Police resorted to lathi charge and later fired tear gas and rubber bullets. In some places, live rounds were used, leading to injuries.
“We were forced to fire in self-defense after the mob turned aggressive and attacked police personnel with sticks and stones,” said a senior police official on condition of anonymity. At least three protesters were hit by bullets and are undergoing treatment at a local hospital, while nine others sustained injuries from baton charges or stone pelting.
Background of the Protests
The NEET UG exam, held earlier this month, saw leaks on social media platforms hours before the test. The Central Bureau of Investigation is probing the matter, but students claim the authorities have failed to act swiftly. Protesters are demanding the cancellation of the exam and a fresh test under strict supervision.
“The leak has destroyed the chances of honest students. We will not back down until our demands are met,” said a student leader leading the protest in Patna.
Government Response
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar appealed for peace, announcing a judicial inquiry into the leak. He also assured that strict action would be taken against those found guilty. However, students remain skeptical.
Curfew has been imposed in the worst-affected areas of Patna and Gaya, and additional paramilitary forces have been deployed. Internet services have been suspended in some districts to prevent the spread of rumors.

Over 18 lakh students appeared for NEET this year, and the leak has caused widespread anxiety. Many are demanding a re-exam, while others fear the repercussions of delays in the admission process. The protest is expected to continue until authorities address their grievances.
