A 75-year-old visually impaired woman was killed and her son injured after a long-standing feud between two neighboring families escalated into violence in Banthra, Lucknow, on Wednesday night.
The deceased, identified as Siyavati Rawat, sustained a fatal head injury during the clash in Mawai Padiyana village around 9:10 pm. She was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to her injuries during treatment. Her son, Rajendra Rawat, also sustained injuries in the incident.
According to police, tensions flared after members of the rival families, who had allegedly consumed alcohol earlier, got into an argument that quickly escalated into stone-pelting. Siyavati, who was on the roof of her house, was struck on the head during the violence.
Based on a complaint filed by Rajendra’s brother, Ravi Rawat, police have registered an FIR for murder and voluntarily causing hurt against the accused—Dharmendra, Govind, Basanti, and Pancham.
Family members claimed the dispute dates back nearly 15 years, when Rajendra had eloped with his neighbor Manohar’s wife. Though both later returned and began living separately, hostility between the families persisted.
DCP South Zone Amit Anand said, “Preliminary probe indicates that the clash was the fallout of a long-standing personal rivalry between the two households. Three accused have been arrested, and the hunt for the fourth is on.”
Further investigation is underway.
