A 26-year-old woman constable of the Border Security Force (BSF), Bishnu Priya Roy, was found hanging in her room at the force's frontier headquarters in Jammu on Monday, officials said. The incident occurred at the Command Hospital within the BSF headquarters in the Paloura area on the outskirts of the city.
Details of the Incident
Constable Roy was undergoing a three-month Lab Assistant Course that began on May 25, 2026. She was staying in accommodation provided to her at the Command Hospital. On Monday morning, she was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a rope. Her body was immediately shifted to a hospital for post-mortem examination.
Officials stated that the cause of death has not yet been determined. Police have initiated inquest proceedings under Section 174 of the CrPC, and a thorough investigation is underway. The BSF has also launched its own internal inquiry.
Background of the Deceased
Bishnu Priya Roy, a native of West Bengal, had joined the BSF approximately three years ago. She was posted to the Jammu frontier headquarters earlier this year. Colleagues described her as a diligent and quiet individual. No suicide note has been recovered from her room.
Official Statements
“The body has been sent for post-mortem, and we are awaiting the report to ascertain the exact cause of death. An inquest has been registered, and all angles are being explored,” said a senior police officer involved in the investigation. BSF officials expressed condolences and assured full cooperation with the investigation.
Broader Context
This incident has raised concerns about mental health and working conditions within paramilitary forces. In recent years, several cases of suicide among BSF and other central armed police forces personnel have been reported, prompting calls for better psychological support and stress management programs. The BSF has counseling services available, but their utilization remains a challenge.
Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
