The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Monday registered a case in the mysterious death of Twisha Sharma, taking over the investigation from Bhopal police following directions of the Supreme Court. The probe has been assigned to the agency’s Special Crime (SC)-3 Unit, with a five-member team headed by a superintendent of police (SP)-rank officer which reached Bhopal later in the evening, according to sources.

CBI Team Arrives in Bhopal

Sources said the CBI team had left Delhi ahead of the formal transfer process and reached Bhopal in the evening to take over the case diary from Katara Hills police station and commence a fresh investigation under a new Regular Case (RC). The agency is likely to seek custody of Twisha’s husband, Samarth Singh, who is currently on police remand, and may recreate the crime scene as part of routine investigative procedures on Tuesday.

Background of the Case

The Madhya Pradesh government had on Saturday issued an official notification transferring the case to the federal agency following sustained demands by Twisha’s family for an independent probe into her death. The Supreme Court had also taken suo motu cognisance of the matter. Any new additions in the case would now be made by the CBI.
