Centre Amends Immigration & Foreigners Order
The Indian government has amended the Immigration and Foreigners Order, revising the list of 'protected' areas in Rajasthan. Foreigners' access to parts of Pokhran and other border areas in the state has been restricted with immediate effect.
Revised Protected Areas List
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification updating the list of protected areas under the Foreigners (Protected Areas) Order, 2025. The new order includes several areas in Rajasthan's border districts, including parts of Pokhran, Jaisalmer, and other sensitive zones near the international border.
Previously, certain areas were open to foreign tourists with special permits. However, the revised list tightens restrictions, requiring prior permission from the district magistrate for any foreign national visiting these regions.
Impact on Tourism and Security
The move aims to bolster national security and prevent unauthorized access to sensitive military installations. Pokhran is known for hosting the Indian Army's Pokhran Field Firing Range and was the site of India's nuclear tests in 1974 and 1998.
Tourism in Jaisalmer and surrounding areas may be affected, as foreign travelers often visit the desert region. However, the government has assured that legitimate tourists can still obtain permits through proper channels.
Exemptions for OCI Cardholders
Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) cardholders are exempt from these restrictions, as they enjoy lifelong visa-free travel to India. However, they are advised to carry valid identification and inform local authorities if visiting restricted zones.
The amendment comes under the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025, which empowers the central government to designate protected areas for security reasons. Similar restrictions already exist in parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Northeast India, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Reactions and Compliance
Local authorities in Rajasthan have been directed to enforce the new rules strictly. Hotels and travel agencies are being informed to verify the permit status of foreign guests before booking accommodations in restricted areas.
The government emphasized that the measure is temporary and subject to review based on the security situation. Foreign nationals currently in restricted zones without valid permits have been given seven days to leave or obtain proper authorization.
