Navi Mumbai: Class XI Dropout Arrested for Stealing Rs 18 Lakh from Home to Fund Lavish Lifestyle
In a shocking incident from Navi Mumbai, a 20-year-old Class XI dropout has been arrested for allegedly stealing gold and cash worth Rs 18 lakh from his own residence in Kharghar. The accused, identified as Shravan Mandhare, reportedly committed the theft to fund an extravagant lifestyle, which included hiring a high-end SUV to impress his friends.
Swift Police Action Leads to Arrest
Kharghar police API Sharad Barkade confirmed that Shravan Mandhare was apprehended from the CBD-Belapur area in the early hours of Friday. The arrest came within just four hours of the FIR being registered, showcasing the efficiency of the police response. According to Barkade, the police tracked Shravan's mobile tower location to locate and detain him swiftly.
Details of the Theft and Investigation
The theft was reported by Shravan's mother, who resides with him, his father, and a younger brother in the Mahavir Heritage society of Kharghar Sector 35. His father serves as the chairman of a credit society. In her police complaint, the mother stated that on March 30, she had securely locked a cupboard locker containing her gold ornaments weighing 165 grams and Rs 1.5 lakh in cash.
However, on April 4, when she opened the locker to retrieve cash for paying the milkman's monthly bill, she was stunned to discover that both the gold and cash were missing. Upon questioning her elder son about the missing valuables, Shravan provided evasive answers and subsequently left home. After he failed to return for five days and ignored her calls, the mother filed a theft complaint against him on Thursday around 8 pm.
Confession and Recovery Efforts
During police interrogation, Shravan allegedly confessed to stealing the gold and cash. He admitted to using the money to cover hotel bills, with only Rs 20,000 of the original Rs 1.5 lakh cash recovered so far. The rest, he claimed, was spent on his lavish expenses. Additionally, Shravan revealed that he had handed over the gold ornaments to an acquaintance to sell for cash. Police are actively working to identify this individual and plan to make further arrests in the case.
Legal Proceedings and Custody
Following his arrest, Shravan Mandhare has been remanded to police custody by a Panvel court until April 13. This custody will allow authorities to continue their investigation, including efforts to recover the remaining stolen assets and apprehend the acquaintance involved in the sale of the gold.
This incident highlights the lengths to which some individuals may go to maintain a flashy lifestyle, even at the cost of betraying their own family. The case serves as a cautionary tale about the consequences of such actions and the swift justice that can follow.
