Rohtak police have arrested the main accused in the firing at Congress MLA Balram Dangi's office in Meham town, solving the case within 24 hours. The suspect, identified as Aman of Lakhan Majra, was apprehended following an encounter with the Crime Branch Meham team near Bainsi village on Sunday.
Accused Injured in Exchange of Fire
Aman sustained a bullet injury to his leg during the exchange of fire and was admitted to PGIMS Rohtak. A country-made pistol and the motorcycle used in the crime were recovered from his possession, according to a police spokesperson.
The incident occurred around 1:13 am on Saturday when two masked men on a motorcycle arrived at the MLA's office, located opposite Meham Police Station. One of them fired several rounds at the office before both fled. CCTV cameras installed at the office captured the entire incident.
Thailand-Based Gangster Link
Preliminary investigation revealed that Aman was in contact with a notorious gangster who fled to Thailand in July 2025. The gangster, facing around 30 criminal cases, has been operating criminal activities from abroad. The identity of a second person involved in the firing has also been established. Aman was riding the motorcycle at the time of the incident, the spokesperson added.
Meham police recovered four empty cartridges from the spot and registered a case against unidentified persons based on the MLA's complaint. Eight teams comprising officials from different Crime Branch units and police stations were formed under senior officers to identify and arrest the accused.
Police Encounter Details
DSP Meham Tanuj Sharma stated that on Sunday, the Crime Branch received information that the main accused was heading towards Meham from Nindana on a motorcycle without a registration number, carrying an illegal weapon. The team set up a checkpoint near Bainsi village. When police signaled the rider to stop, he attempted to flee towards the fields and opened fire at the police personnel. Despite repeated warnings to surrender, the accused continued firing, prompting the police to retaliate in self-defense.
The DSP confirmed that the accused was injured during the exchange and subsequently overpowered. The accused fired three rounds, while the police team also fired three rounds in response.
Meanwhile, Rohtak Police have appealed to the public to stay away from criminals operating from abroad and to refrain from engaging in unlawful activities.
