Anand Court Rejects Bail Applications in Nilgai Hunting Case
A local court in Anand, Gujarat, has firmly denied bail to five individuals accused of illegally hunting a nilgai, an animal listed under Schedule II of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 (as amended in 2022). The incident occurred in the Gambhira Bhatha area, which falls under the Anklav range of the Social Forestry division, highlighting ongoing efforts to combat wildlife crimes in the region.
Details of the Arrests and Charges
According to forest department officials, the five accused were arrested on March 15 in connection with the hunting of the nilgai. They have been identified as Ashraf Khan Raj, Lalsinh Mahida, Arbaz Khan Raj, Ashfaq Hussain Asif Miyan Malek, and Anwar alias Badar Veriya. The charges against them are severe, as the nilgai is a protected species, and hunting it violates stringent provisions of the Wildlife Protection Act, which aims to preserve India's biodiversity.
Ongoing Search for Absconding Accused
In a related development, another individual, Farooq Liaquat Ali Saiyed, a resident of Verakhadi, remains absconding in connection with the case. A senior official from the forest department stated, "We have launched an intensive search operation to trace him." This underscores the department's commitment to ensuring all involved parties are brought to justice, reflecting a broader crackdown on illegal hunting activities in Gujarat.
The rejection of bail by the Anand court sends a strong message about the seriousness of wildlife offenses, emphasizing that such acts will not be tolerated. The case continues to unfold as authorities work to apprehend the remaining suspect and proceed with legal actions against all accused.
