A 28-year-old man was arrested in Delhi for allegedly sexually harassing a woman in a moving car under the pretext of taking her out for momos, police said on Tuesday.
Incident Details
The accused, identified as Ravi Kumar, a resident of outer Delhi, befriended the 24-year-old woman on social media and invited her for a ride to eat momos on Sunday evening. However, during the drive, he allegedly diverted the car to an isolated area and made obscene remarks, demanded sexual favours, and touched her inappropriately.
According to the police, the woman managed to escape and filed a complaint at the local police station. Based on her statement, a case under sections 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code was registered.
Arrest and Investigation
The accused was arrested within 24 hours of the complaint, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer district) Sameer Sharma. “The accused was traced using technical surveillance and his mobile phone location. He has been sent to judicial custody,” Sharma added.
Police recovered the car used in the crime and are investigating if the accused has a history of similar offences. The woman was also counselled by the police.
Community Response
The incident sparked outrage on social media, with many calling for stricter action against such crimes. Local women’s groups have demanded increased police patrolling in isolated areas.
“This is a stark reminder of the dangers women face even in seemingly safe social interactions. We urge women to be cautious and report any such incidents immediately,” said Meera Singh, a women’s rights activist.
