Dhubri: In a significant breakthrough, the Dhubri police apprehended the kingpin of a burglary gang from Aironjongla village on the outskirts of Dhubri town on Saturday night. Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by Officer-in-Charge of Dhubri Police Station (Sadar) Pritam Das raided a house and arrested the suspect. From his possession, the police recovered cash amounting to Rs 1,20,000 and a mobile handset.
Accused Identified as Notorious Burglar
The accused has been identified as Sofiur Rahman (35), a dreaded burglar and the mastermind behind a network operating in the western Assam districts, including Barpeta, according to a police source. The source further revealed that Rahman was wanted in connection with numerous burglary incidents across these districts.
Police Action Prevented Major Crime
Speaking to TOI, Officer Pritam Das stated that the police had prior information about Rahman's entry into Dhubri district. As soon as they received inputs regarding his whereabouts, they swiftly raided the house where he was taking shelter and allegedly planning a large-scale burglary in the area. Das remarked, “We are interrogating the kingpin of the burglary gang and trying to gather as much information as possible about his network. However, one thing is certain: his timely apprehension averted a major burglary in Dhubri district.”
The police are now conducting further investigations to dismantle the entire network and bring other members to justice.
